FebruaryInspired by my first trip, I came back for more a year later. And again I fell in love with the beauty of this country. It seemed like I couldn't get enough of the vibe, the music, the climate, the nature and the people.

FebruaryMy love story with Guatemala began back in 2016 when I came here for the first time as a traveler. After 6 weeks of getting to know some parts the country, I was in love.

February2018 was the year I decided to try and find some opportunities as a freelancer while traveling the country. I was surprised about how many wonderful jobs I found and how this would help me meet many great people who today are amongst my dearest friends spread out all over the country. Thanks to every one of you who trusted me and gave me a chance...this paved the road for many things!

February2019 I went back and spent most of the time enjoying what I love most: shooting and spending time with friends. Even better if they pay you for doing it! And the most exciting part was that I would be back in a couple of months!

FebruaryThis trip was probably the most fateful one of all. But first I bought a shipping container...to use as a storage unit on the property and to eventually convert it into a little workshop. Then, after spending the usual 6 weeks of traveling around the country, exactly one day before my planned departure back to Germany, the pandemic hit...and changed everything.

AugustThis was definitely a turning point: I found my beautiful little paradise - almost by accident. And then again - I believe in destiny. The moment I stood in front of this property, I was hooked! The process of buying it began right after video calling my parents to tell them the news. I was beyond excited. Had I only known at that time, how quickly my vision would turn into reality...

FebruaryIn February I started framing out the container. There was so much to learn and I enjoyed every second of it. Also - the bathroom accessories I had ordered in the city arrived.

AprilThe container needed a lot of love. Grinding, cleaning, sanding, spraying....it took forever and was messy. The big highlight was breaking through the walls and cutting the window openings. The first time I got an idea about how light falls into the container.

JanuaryMoving from Germany to Guatemala was kind of easy...I only had a trolley and a bagpack with the most necessary stuff. But so much energy and motivation to start this incredible journey. January was mostly about getting settled in at my friend's house who were so lovely to let me crash until was able to stand on my own feet. And I started ordering materials - mainly wood to start the construction.

MarchMarch was all about electrical, getting the water pipes in the ground and finishing up on the framing and details.

MayIn May I ordered the first furniture, did more work on the trenches for sewage and fresh water and electrical.

JuneJune was crucial to be able to finish the interior. I had a foundation poured for the new workshop and garage so that I could empty the house and start working on windows, walls, ceiling etc.

AugustAnother very busy month...fencing the property, starting to put in insulation, hardwood floors, painting the container with its final color...

OctoberOctober was about finishing touches. Decorating, putting in the main door, finishing the bathroom, getting plumbing to work, painting the walls etc...it finally started to look like an actual house!

JulyJuly was intense. The first built-ins were delivered and mounted, the windows installed, the garage frame was built in only 23 hours (non-stop), the garage closed in and most importantly: I moved! The intention was to "live" in the garage until the house was kind of ready but after one night in the hammock, I decided to move into the (still quite empty) container. Rainy season had started and it was way more comfortable like that.

SeptemberDrywall, faucets, sealing the floor, tiling the shower, installing the glass pane in the shower, gardening - it was a race to get the house done!

DecemberFinally done! I literally dropped the paintbrush on December 24th at noon after one whole year of intense work and sweat. But it was all worth it - it felt incredible to finally see my vision become reality.

NovemberIt was time to design and have the kitchen built. Details need patience, many travels to my carpenters workshop and loads of going back to the drawing board. But installation day came and the final result was stunning!

My first guests came exactly 3 days after the container house was done. I can't tell you how excited, exhausted and happy I was! A year full of work, challenges, tears, great moments, difficult situations and instances where I almost lost my patience was over and I could start a new chapter: Actually living in the house and receiving guests!
